Adult Trainee – That Awkward High School Romance

Adult Trainee is divided up into three different stories about Garam High School seniors and their romantic lives.

Abstinence for 100 Days

Jae Min (Ryu Ui Hyun) has a porn and masturbation addiction. He develops a crush on his class president, Ye Kyung (Mi Yeo) and decides to quit porn and masturbation for 100 days.

Ryu Ui Hyun was perfectly casted for the awkward shy boy who has a crush. You might remember him from Three Bold Siblings or one of the Turks in River Where the Moon Rises. We rarely see the boys perspective in a crush in kdramas and it was adorable and cringe at the same time. You can see the day by day journey of a teenage boy resisting his natural urge. This was a sweet yet raunchy teenage love story.

Pretend to Date For 100 Days

Bang Yu Ra (Jo Yoo Jung) got dumped by her boyfriend and starts dating her best friend, Da Hyun (Park Se Hyun). She bribes her childhood best friend, Na Moo (Ryeo Woon) with a signed Son Heung Min soccer ball to pretend to be her boyfriend for 100 days. We kdrama lovers all know this ends up. Yu Ra was nicknamed the “Neo-Confucian girl” because she didn’t want any physical contact with her ex and that’s why he broke up with her.

This is a very sad and unfortunately common dilemma with young women go through while dating in their teens. “Will he leave me if I put out?” or “Will he think I’m a slut if I go too fast?”. The slut shaming culture is finally making it’s way out! This story was also very cute and adorable way of talking about young love.

Who is J?

Na Eun (Kwon Young Eun) received a mysterious letter signed by “J” asking her not to diet and she has great hips. Na Eun struggles with body image being overweight and has to deal with bullying at school. Na Eun’s mother is a former Judo champion who is always trying to feed her and her brother is constantly fat shaming her.

She suspects the letters came from a couple of her classmates who have been kind to her. She has two prime suspects. Kang Joon (Kim Min Ki) a sweet and helpful idol trainee in her class or Jin Beom (Jo Seung Joon) a friendly classmate who has grew up abroad and still maintains his western manners.

My Overall Review

This kdrama is refreshing and hilarious and something that is much needed for young Koreans. It’s a less raunchy version of American Pie. Somehow poking fun at teenage love has always been amusing and also remembering a time when we went through all of our firsts is always entertaining. The writing, directing, and acting was so well done. It was light and still heart warming and fun.
