Soundtrack #1 – Holy Shimkoong

Disney plus did us North American Kdrama lover dirty. Someone needs to tell the Korean networks not use Disney plus because it’s not being distributed internationally. Even Apple TV Plus is doing better than Disney Plus. Anyways, after much research, I figured out how use a VPN to watch it here without using the sketchy sites. I was motivated to watch In the Soop.

This is a bite sized, 4 episode kdrama that’s full of feels. It’s about the life long friendship of Eun Soo (Han So Hee) and Sun Woo (Park Hyung Sik). They have been friends for about 20 years and start to develop feelings for each other. Eun Soo is a song lyricist and Sun Woo is a photographer. Both are mildly successful in their careers and Eun Woo is having writer’s block. Her producer told her she needs to have more feeling in her lyrics and really needs to understand what unrequited love is. She consulted her BFF Sun Woo because he is an expert in unrequited love.

My Review

I wasn’t expecting much but this show was really touching. Park Hyung Shik and Han So Hee are fantastic actors and they have beautiful chemistry together. I couldn’t picture Han So Hee playing such a cute and frazzled character and she pulled it off so well.

The long childhood unrequited love theme in Kdramas is a recurrent theme and the success of the show is highly dependent on how they make you feel. Let me tell you, I felt it. The scene where Eun Soo accidently rolled over and fell asleep on Sun Woo’s arm was the first step in the right direction. The combination of the perfectly timed music and the acting gives off the warm and fuzzies. It did not feel cliche or something we’ve seen before. It was just beautiful.

Sun Woo finally confessed his feelings right before he leaves for a year to study under another well known photographer. I was kind of surprised that Eun Soo had no idea. Before this point, my impression of her was that she was keeping Sun Woo on her hook to make herself fell better. You know those girls. They keep one of those boys around and to do all the pumpkin picking and amusement parking until someone better comes along. She wasn’t. Eun Soo was sincere in their friendship and didn’t want to commit in case they ever break up, she would lose her best friend.

There is a flashback to when Sun Woo enlisted in the military and came to Eun Soo’s job to say good bye. Eun Soo pretended to be cool in front of him and told him she would visit him and 2 years was not a big deal. Then we see her crying after he leaves and Sun Woo saw this. Eun Soo explained to him that it was because she thought she was missing her friend and she didn’t know that what she was feeling was love.

At one moment it felt like Eun Soo missed her window but I guess Sun Woo just wanted her to work for it like he did for so many years. I thought at this point for sure it’s going to be a sad ending and that was it. He just wanted her to make some effort to make sure she wanted it as bad as he did.

This show so incredible for so many reasons. Firstly, it’s only four episodes. Sometimes a good love story doesn’t need 16 episodes to feel complete. The perfect chemistry between Han So Hee and Park Hyung Shik was so sweet. The music and directing of this show was on point. I would call this a must watch for all of the romance suckers out there.
