Those Crazy April Releases – A Quick Review

This long overdue! Those crazy emotionally gut wrenching Kdramas at a glance. If you haven’t watched these yet, you can check which one to watch next.

Tomorrow (Netflix)

This one took me by surprise. I was expecting a comedic shit show. I just really want to see Rowoon play a complete goofball. Tomorrow is about Choi Joon Woong (Rowoon), a man in his 20s trying to get a job at a half decent company (like every fresh university graduate) but he keeps getting pushed aside for other candidates who have connections. He gets into an accident while helping someone and falls into a coma. He walks up as a temp grim reaper. He gets put into the suicide prevention group alongside Goo Ryeon (the beautiful Kim Hee Seon) and Lim Ryung Goo (Yoon Ji On). They are the hated group and all of the other grim reapers want them to fail.

This show came out of left field and was a total emotional rollercoaster. It really put into perspective why people commit suicide and why they too are victims. The viewer looks into the painful lives of regular everyday people and the grim reapers do what they can to help them see why their lives are beautiful. Despite the work they do, the grim reapers also had a lot of pain their previous lives that they are also working through.

If you need a good cathartic outlet, this is a great show. The acting is amazing and you have an OG, Kim Hee Seon, as one of the leads. There are no lovey dovey story lines with the leads. They show every small glimmer of happiness in everyone’s lives.

Our Blues (Netflix)

This right here is a work of art. It takes place in Jeju Island and follows the daily lives of the people who live and work there and we live through all of their love and their pain. This was without a doubt, the best show that aired during this time. Each episode is about a different character and the first episode was about Han Soo (Cha Seung Won). He is an average middle class dad who works at a bank who is supporting his daughter’s dreams of becoming a pro golfer in the US. This story was the warm up for the ugly crying that is to come with subsequent episodes.

I’ll definitely do a full review on this show later as it deserves it’s own post. This show is an absolute must watch with an all star cast. I swear, if you gave this group of actors blank sheets of paper and called it a script, they would have made it amazing.

My Liberation Notes (Netflix)

This is one of those slow burners that hits you in the chest and keeps you waiting to see what is going to happen next. This kdrama follows the unhappy lives of Gi Jeong (Lee El), Chang Hee (Lee Min Ki), and Mi Jeong (Kim Ji Won). The three of them represent the pillars of misery caused by the monotony of their daily lives. They are the ultimate essence of mediocrity. Sounds pretty horrible right? Despite all of this, you want them to win and find all happiness! Gi Jeong is the eldest daughter in her late 30s and she is looking for love and begins dating Tae Hoon (Lee Ki Woo). Chang Hee is just angry and frustrated with everything. Mi Jeong is the embodiment of anhedonia and wants to be liberated from this feeling. Then there is the mysterious Mr. Gu (Son Seok Ku) who works for their father. They know nothing about him.

Side bar: I have a huge crush on Lee Ki Woo, mostly because he rescues dogs. So seeing him in the show was a huge bonus.

Other side bar: Son Seok Ku and Lee El played husband and wife in Matrimonial Chaos.

This show is a lot slower paced but will keep you interested as you become more and more attached to the characters and start rooting for them. This show gives you the sense hope and longing for happiness for the characters.

Shooting Stars (Viki)

This show is about an entertainment company and the relationship of Oh Han Byul (Lee Sung Kyung) the Team Leader of the PR department and Gong Tae Sung (Kim Young Dae) a celebrity at the company.

The show in general is cute and the characters are all very likeable. It’s meant to be a funny, happy, feel good show. This show was a disappointment. Not just the Africa but also the lack of chemistry between the Lee Sung Kyung and Kim Young Dae. Kim Young Dae is still a very young and inexperienced actor and feel he will get better with time.

From Now, Showtime (Viki)

Cha Cha Woong (Park Hae Jin) is a magician who communicates with ghosts and Go Seul Hee (Ji Jin Koo) is a rookie cop. This kdrama was a cute easy watch. Ji Jin koo is adorable and charming and I love what she brings to all of kdramas. I hope to see her in more stuff.

Again My Life (Viki)

This show is an absolute must watch. It’s about a lawyer Kim Hee Woo (Lee Joon Gi) who dies at the hands of an evil man he was trying to take down but was given a chance to a do over. He comes back to a when he was a high school student.

Why is this show so enjoyable? It is a fantastic take down the white collar villain without that feeling frustration and exhausted feeling. You get to see Hee Woo get a second chance to help people that he is able to. There is progress in each episode and you don’t have that feeling of constantly being knocked down. Also, true to Lee Joon Gi kdramas, lots of awesome fight scenes. Give this one a watch, there is a second season brewing in the works.
