Korean movies are always hit or miss for me. I find a lot of them end really sadly or leave the ending open ended. During flights is one of the few times I actually watch a Korean movie. If you’re not in the mood to committing to a 16 to 20 episode drama and want to quick bit of entertainment. I’m not going to list the obvious ones that everyone should have already watched such as Parasite, The Host, Okja, or Train to Busan. There are many top ten lists online based on ratings and gross earnings that can be looked up. These are the movies that I enjoyed, in no particular order.
Time to Hunt (2020)
This movie is about four best friends, played by Lee Je Hoon, Choi Woo Shik, Ahn Jae Hong, and Park Jung Min, who navigate through dystopian Korea to find a way to survive. They come up with foul proof plan to rob an underground casino but things don’t always go as planned. This movie is well made with great actors. It’s a bit darker than what I’m into but worth watching.
Mrs. and Ms. Cop (Girl Cops) (2019)
This is movie is a must watch for all comedy lovers. It is absolutely hilarious and I was laughing like a crazy person on the plane while I was watching this. It’s about the life of a successful female cop Mi Yung (Ra Mi Ran) and how she went to from a bad ass accomplished detective to an administrative cop. Her and sister in law Ji Hye (Lee Sung Kyung) get together to take down a cyber porn ring. They touch on some serious issues like cyber bullying and how women are treated in a male dominant workplace. It’s amazingly hilarious and with sick ass action scenes. Also, for you Squid Game fans, Wi Ha Joon plays the villain and he is terrifying in it.
Midnight Runners (2017)
Continuing on to hilarious cop movies, this is another definite must watch for action comedy fans. Park Ki Joon (Park Seo Joon) and Kang Hee Yeol (Kang Ha Neul) are in police academy and immediately became best friends during the entrance exam. Ki Joon was good at all of the physical tests and Hee Yeol was good at all of the written parts of the exam. This is the most bromantic duo I’ve ever seen. The chemistry between Park Seo Joon and Kang Ha Neul is perfection. I read somewhere they played video games together to bond when they agreed to do this movie. This movie also brings to light serious issues about underage sex trafficking and how the two police students take them down. Aside from the scary and serious stuff, it was non-stop laughs and both mains are so loveable. This movie deserves a sequel.
The Thieves (2012)
This is the ultimate heist movie with a stacked all star cast. You have the queens of Korean entertainment, Kim Hye Soo, Jun Ji Hyun and Kim Hae Sook. Then you have the all star men, Lee Jung Jae, Kim Soo Hyun, and Kim Yoon Seok. Everyone was amazing in it and I believe Jun Ji Hyun did her own stunts. If you want to watch a good heist movie with good looking people, this one is for you.
Twenty (2015)
Hilarious movie about 3 friends (played by Kim Woo Bin, Lee Jun Ho, and Kang Ha Neul) who are finding their place in the world after high school. It’s an easy Saturday afternoon watch. I have only seen Kim Woo Bin play the rich asshole and it was refreshing to see him as a rich brat instead. I don’t know if this movie is for everyone. This is a bro movie and there are a couple crude sex jokes that some may find offensive. I would probably call it American Pie Lite. If you can get passed the sex jokes, it’s hilarious.
Tune Into Love (2019)
I have something for everyone on this list. This a sweet love story between Mi Soo (Kim Go Eun) and Hyun Woo (Jung Hae In). Over the years they are in and out of each others lives from 1997 to the 2000s with the IMF crisis in the backdrop. This is a slow burning love story and the plot is also great with two fantastic leads. If you want a good love story, this movie is for you.
